Additional Information
Who We Are
We’re a diverse group of women of various ages and backgrounds. We are athletes and businesswomen who work constantly to promote and advance our sport and our league. We’re tough as hell on the track, but we’re also some of the nicest girls around. Talk to us, ask us questions about anything. If there’s one thing we love to do, its talk about derby.
Who Can Join
All of our skaters must be 18+ and female. Ability to skate and size is not a consideration. We can teach you how to skate and how to fall. Our girls come in all ages and sizes!
If You Decide To Join
Be ready to fall in love. As some wise rollergirls have said, derby isn’t a sport, it’s a religion. As an HKRG skater you will train hard several times a week and get in the best shape of your life. Suddenly you’ll be talking all about trucks and bearings and jams and booty blocks. You will participate in fundraisers and make appearances at lots of public events. You’ll meet skaters from other leagues in Tennessee and across the country…and you’ll be doing it all with the most badass women in Knoxville.
How Much Time Does It Take?
Being a member of The Hard Knox Roller Girls requires a significant time commitment. Practices, meetings, bouts, promotional events and planning are expected from every member. But, all are fun and worth every minute! We have three scheduled practices per week and there are practice requirements prior to bouting.
How Much Does It Cost?
The biggest expense to joining derby is the equipment. Please check out a practice or two before making the initial investment - skates & equipment can cost upwards of $300. All skaters are required to pay $35 monthly for dues which pay for our rink time. Supplemental health insurance is required from USARS for $40 per year.
What Equipment Do I Need?
In order to skate with us, you need at minimum: quad speed skates (no inlines!!) indoor & outdoor wheels; and protective padding. Padding requirements are knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and a helmet. All equipment is required for all practices. Tailbone / crash pads are recommended.
Skates can be purchased online through a reputable dealer. Please contact freshmeat@hardknoxrollergirls.com for a list of reputable dealers and the inside scoop on some great derby starter kits and discounts.
When & Where Are Your Practices?
We have scheduled practices 2 times a week.
Sundays: 7:30pm - 9:30pm Lenoir City Armory
Wednesdays: 7:30pm - 9:30pm Lenoir City Armory
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time to put on gear and get dressed. Extra practices may be added at training committees discretion.

Referees, Artists, & other Non-Skating Volunteers
We always need volunteers, especially referees. Refs can be 18+, male or female. General volunteers are needed to do anything from providing security to just directing people and generally helping things flow. Artists are always welcome and encouraged to submit designs for HKRG merchandise, posters and fliers. Please email artwork to creative@hardknoxrollergirls.com.
Referees
We love our refs and we need a lot more. Training will be provided. Responsibilities include:
- Attending bouting practices and games
- Helping out with track setup
- Learning the rules
- Skating while reffing (Quads are preferred)
If you can handle it, you will quickly become an important member of our derby family and we promise to love you forever!
Stat Keeper
If you want to intently observe practices and games and you love details, sign up here. We need stat lovers to log and crunch our numbers so we know how we're doing. Responsibilities include:
- Attending bouting practices and games
- Learning the rules
- Compiling reliable jamming and blocking statistics for general distribution
Announcers
We are looking for awesome announcers to rock the mic at our games. Responsibilities include:
- Attending enough practices to learn all the girls' names and positions
- Studying up on the names of the girls from other teams that we play
- Learning the rules
- Generally being entertaining and calling the game so that the crowd can follow the action.
Creative Volunteers
Got a great idea for a poster or flier? We always need help in coming up with cool ways to promote our league and our events. If you have mad design skills or a cool digital video camera that you're dying to fill up with derby footage, give us a shout.
We are also always looking for performers to hook us up with talent for after parties and other special fundraisers and charity events. So if you have a rockin band, awesome DJ setup, freak show talents, or some other performance art skills that you'd like to showcase to the derby crowd, let us know.
Event Staff
No special skills? Not enough free time to come to practices and learn all those pesky rules? We can still use your help with event production jobs like setting up chairs, handing out fliers and posters to promote our events, and about a zillion other things.
